MediaTek Inc. is a Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company. It is a market leader in system-on-chip solutions for wireless communications, HDTV, DVD and Blu-ray.

MediaTek was founded in 1997 and now has 25 offices worldwide. The Headquarter is in Hsinchu, Taiwan. In the beginning MediaTek was a unit of United Microelectronics Corporation assigned with designing chipsets for home users. The unit was spun off on 28 May 1997 and MediaTek was incorporated. The first products of the company were chipsets for optical drives. Subsequently the portfolio was expanded into chip solutions for DVD players, digital TVs, mobile phones, smartphones and tablets. The company’s division for mobile devices solutions was launched in 2004. Eleven years later, it was taking orders for more than 700 million mobile SOCs per annum, which included solutions for smartphones and tablets.
